Well, maybe “great” is not exactly the right word… but cheap, filling, delicious, and, if you know what to order, fresh Chinese food!
The perhaps unfortunately-named B & M Mei Sing is a downtown San Francisco Chinese steam table restuarant that's been around for years. They're on 2nd Street between (Jessie & Stevenson).
The trick is to avoid the steam table! A few items, such as my favorite, BBQ Pork Chow Mein, can be order off the menu and are made to order for just over $5! When you order fresh at B & M's counter, they give you a plastic numbered token that you take to your table, stopping along the way to get a glass of tea from the dispenser and a pair of chopsticks. After a few minutes, an incredibly efficient woman will appear with your plate of food and deliver it to your table in exchange for the token.
Cheaper than a sandwich and a great plate of food when you're cravin' the noodles. Other freshly-made items include the wonton soups and fried rice.
