Great Cheap Restaurant: B & M Mei Sing

By admin - Posted on 20 September 2007

Well, maybe "great" is not exactly the right word... but cheap, filling, delicious, and, if you know what to order, fresh Chinese food!

The perhaps unfortunately-named B & M Mei Sing is a downtown San Francisco Chinese steam table restuarant that's been around for years. They're on 2nd Street between (Jessie & Stevenson).

The trick is to avoid the steam table! A few items, such as my favorite, BBQ Pork Chow Mein, can be order off the menu and are made to order for just over $5! When you order fresh at B & M's counter, they give you a plastic numbered token that you take to your table, stopping along the way to get a glass of tea from the dispenser and a pair of chopsticks. After a few minutes, an incredibly efficient woman will appear with your plate of food and deliver it to your table in exchange for the token.

Cheaper than a sandwich and a great plate of food when you're cravin' the noodles. Other freshly-made items include the wonton soups and fried rice.

Check it out!

On the one hand, I'm sorry to say that B & M Mei Sing has raised it's prices (about $0.80 extra for a plate of chow mein, around $6.20 now).

The compassionate Cheap Bastard has to realize that since this increase is due to San Francisco's new requirement that businesses of a certain size provide health care for their employees, that this will make life CHEAPER for those who work that B & M.

Still, for the price, no one downtown serves a faster and tastier plate of Szechuan Chow Mein.

are you kidding me???? this is not cheap. how much are they paying you sell outs??

C'mon! So a $5 lunch is not free, but it's not expensive, either. Anyway, we're just starting out at this site and we're definitely too cheap for "standards."

I could mention that you can get Chinese food for $1 at a place like Hong Kong Express on Mission Street, but eat there at your own risk!

Yup, this is where the big money is. We've been found out! Guess it's time to come up with a new lucrative plan.
