Way back when I was in college at the University of Florida, the local troupe of Hare Krishna devotees would set up in the Plaza offering free food to all who were hungry (which was basically all of us students!). There was definitely something to be desired about the quality of their curried offerings, though — you can get a bit tired of ghee-soaked potatoes day in day out.
But now, right here in San Francisco, a local group, Curry Without Worry, has set up a weekly Nepalese dinner in the Civic Center Plaza. The food is prepared by the owners of the Taste of the Himalayas restaurant on Lombard Street and is offered to the public, rain or shine, for $1 a meal. A Cheap Bastard's Shangri-La!
The Nepalese soul food consists of
- Nine Bean Sprouted Bean Soup
- Vegetable Curry
- Rice
- Nan Bread Puri
- Tomato and Timmur Chutney
Check it out! You won't even have to withstand the bad harmonium concert with repetitive chanting of my college days.
